How to keep artificial flowers beautiful

A lasting bouquet needs no vase water, but occasional attention keeps it looking its best.

Jetta, an artificial flower bouquet with white and lime-green flowers, taupe hydrangea and green foliage in a gold-coloured vase.

Like any interior object, a bouquet collects a little dust. Heat, moisture and years of strong sunlight can also affect colour and material.

Fortunately, care is simple.

Regular is better than one deep clean

A soft duster works for most of the bouquet. Use a soft brush for detailed petals and a dry microfibre cloth for larger sturdy leaves.

Start dry

Materials such as polyester, latex and foam react differently to moisture. Always begin with careful dry cleaning.

The shower is not the quickest solution

Water may collect inside flowers and connections and can affect bindings, internal metal parts and the vase.

Daylight yes, hours of direct sun no

A bright room is fine, but avoid a permanent place directly behind a window in intense sun or next to a strong heat source.

Look at it occasionally

View the bouquet from a distance and correct shifted stems in small steps, holding them lower down rather than pulling the flower head.

Storing it temporarily

Use a roomy dry box without pressure on flower heads or branches, away from damp and large temperature changes.

Low maintenance is not no maintenance

A few minutes of gentle care is a good exchange for a bouquet that does not wilt after a week.

With gentle dry care and a good permanent place, your bouquet will keep looking well cared for.
